What Your Favorite Yellowjackets Character Says About You

Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for Yellowjackets season 3.

It seems as though Yellowjackets has taken the teenage girl population by storm, especially after the season 3 finale dropped on April 11th, and I for one am not excluded from this obsession. This show follows the Yellowjackets, a fictional high school girl’s soccer team left stranded in the woods after their plane crashed on the way to nationals. We witness their slow descent into madness during their attempt to survive what they label “The Wilderness”, while also seeing how these events have shaped their adult lives in the present timeline–25 years after the crash. Everyone has at least one favorite character in any piece of media they consume, and I find it especially fascinating to examine your favorite Yellowjackets character, as they all have done considerably evil things, but it can be argued that these actions are redeemable. Depending on which character you most identify with or feel a connection to, you may believe that certain characters had more justification for their harmful actions over others, and I analyze what this favoritism says about you below.

Lottie

My true Antler Queen. If you’re like me, you were hoping against hope that the season 3 finale would reveal that Lottie was actually alive, and the scene where she woke up in the morgue made you believe your theory was correct. Unfortunately, we were wrong. If Lottie is your favorite character, you might not completely agree with all of her mystical beliefs, but you understand where she’s coming from and believe that her actions are justifiable due to her mental illness. You believe that Lottie is the true Antler Queen, and that she should have never transferred her authority over to Shauna. You might also feel misunderstood by your parents, and therefore are able to empathize with Lottie’s loneliness and desperation to discover her identity. You love a good meditation, and believe herbal remedies are the key to just about every ailment.

Natalie

If Natalie’s your favorite, I’m so sorry–this girl can never catch a break. From feeling forced to kill Coach Scott to being abused by Shauna while the others simply watched, season 3 has put this girl through the ringer. You are most definitely a “Natalie is the Antler Queen” truther, and believe that she was the only sane and effective ruler in The Wilderness. If you love this character, you might feel like the loner of your friend group, and that your peers don’t always understand you or your motivations. Like the fans that love Lottie, you too might have a rocky relationship with your parents, which has shaped your rebellious nature. You may have a cold and standoffish exterior, but you have a selfless heart and will always help those in need.

Shauna

Um. This is certainly an interesting choice. If Shauna’s still your favorite character after watching season 3 I am honestly concerned. I mean, if you’ve stuck it out this long you are definitely the person that all your friends can rely on, but you can be loyal to a fault. If you still like Shauna after witnessing her descent into dictatorship, I think you can’t let go of the innocent and traumatized girl from season 1, and are convinced that she is still in there somewhere. You also like to take charge in group situations, which is why you are able to justify Shauna’s extreme leadership. I’ll even go as far as to say that you too had strong feelings for your best friend, but that friendship ultimately ended sourly.

Taissa

If Taissa is your favorite character, you are definitely worried for her sanity after witnessing what she did with Van’s heart—if you know you know. Your favorite Yellowjackets couple is Taissa and Van, meaning you are furious at the events of season 3 episode 9, and Melissa is your number one enemy. You are extremely competitive and goal-oriented, and will do anything for the ones you love, even putting yourself at risk for their benefit. You often put your own beliefs and morals to the side in order to help your friends and family, and sometimes feel pressure to project a certain image of yourself to the public in order to be accepted and liked.

Van

You are really going through it if Van is your favorite. After Lottie died you were convinced that Van wouldn’t succumb to her cancer this season, as you didn’t believe that the writers would kill off two characters from the adult timeline in a single season. You are obsessed with film and T.V., and pride yourself on having watched all of the classic films, which you have meticulously logged and reviewed on Letterboxd Pro. You love physical media, and have an extensive collection of CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes that you regularly use. You are also the comic relief in your friend group, which often leads people to overlook your struggles.

Misty

If Misty is your favorite, you were so excited about her hero arc in the season finale, and love that she was included in the plan to distract Shauna. You struggled with sports throughout your childhood, but have always been academically talented. You often felt left out as a kid and tried your hardest to be liked by everyone, which helps you identify with Misty’s forced isolation from the team. You also love a good mystery, whether it’s a true crime podcast, a mystery novel, or an investigative T.V. show, and pride yourself on always knowing who committed the crime before it is revealed.

Akilah

Sweet, sweet Akilah. I totally get why she is your favorite. You definitely have a grudge against Travis for claiming that The Wilderness showed Akilah to him in a vision, and just want her to be left alone with her goats. You fell in love with her character when she befriended the mouse in season 2, and she most likely became your favorite character after it was revealed that the mouse was never actually alive. You love all things nature, whether it be animals or plants, and feel a deep identification with Akilah’s motherly bond with the group’s animals. You are convinced that she is still alive in the adult timeline, and are sincerely hoping that her adult self will be revealed in the next season.

Mari

My deepest condolences. You were absolutely heartbroken after watching the season 3 finale, and you probably needed a couple days to recuperate from that trauma. If your favorite character is Mari you probably have loved her since the beginning, as you realized that her snarky personality is the most realistic teenage girl response to being stranded in the mountains for months on end. Ever since Hannah was introduced, you were convinced that she would be Pit Girl instead of Mari, and in the season 3 finale when Mari took off her jacket and pants to reveal that infamous white dress your heart dropped. You are not afraid to speak your mind or argue about something that you feel passionate about, but that means that you don’t always have a filter, which can get you into trouble. In reality, you just have a dark sense of humor that not everybody understands or appreciates, which can lead to feelings of rejection.
